It has been hard in recent weeks to avoid news stories about the Krabloonik dog sledding operation in Snowmass.  The owner has been charged with animal cruelty and is due in court next month.  Media coverage has gone beyond these charges to include an inter-family dispute, the relationship between the company and Snowmass Village and it’s mayor.  The story has also had its share of tangled relationships and friendships involving members of the media.  Aspen Times Editor Rick Carroll, in an editorial this week called it a media orgy.  Carroll told us he is getting exasperated with the story.  He spoke with APR's Roger Adams.

The 411 on the X Games

For the 13th year Aspen hosts the X Games starting Thursday at the Buttermilk ski area. But, beyond the competitions on the hill, downtown Aspen will see concerts and events sharing in the spirit of the games. While it will be fun, it could lead to some traffic, parking and other issues for folks trying to get around town.

Secret Service Takes Over "Skimmer" Investigation in Aspen

Thieves placed a "skimmer" on an Aspen ATM at Wells Fargo Bank. Police removed the device on Monday and are recommending people who used the ATM, to monitor their bank accounts.

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating the possible theft of ATM user information from a bank in Aspen. On Monday, police discovered a “skimmer” on an ATM at Wells Fargo Bank. Thieves use the device to read data strips on bank cards. A small camera was also attached to the ATM to record when people punched in their ID numbers.

This kind of fraud has happened in Aspen before but this is the first time law enforcement was able to retrieve the skimmer before thieves removed it. Blair Weyer is a spokesperson for the Aspen Police Department.

Aspen Journalism has obtained five different video feeds from the January 5th crash of a private jet at the Aspen Airport. See below for more & video.

From Aspen Journalism:

"In response to a Colorado Open Records Act request from Aspen Journalism, the Aspen/Pitkin County airport has released video of the fatal jet crash that occurred on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014.

The video was captured by five different cameras normally used by airport officials to monitor activity on the ramps, or aprons, outside the general aviation and commercial aviation terminals."

Schwartz Aims to Bring Internet Access to Colorado's Rural Areas

State Senator Gail Schwartz is wrapping up her last term in office. She's introducing a bill that aims to bring broadband internet access to rural areas.

Lawmakers are meeting in Denver, as the legislative session ramps up. Already, bills targeting wildfire mitigation and renewable energy have been introduced. Senator Gail Schwartz of Snowmass Village is working on a number of bills during her last term in office. One aims to bring broadband internet access to remote and rural areas. The democrat is termed out after this year. Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen sat down with her on Monday.
