Morning Edition Host/Producer

Aspen Public Radio is hiring a news host who can serve as a trusted voice for the Roaring Fork Valley community. This host/producer will be responsible for anchoring NPR’s Morning Edition and producing local content for broadcast, web, and social media channels as a general assignment reporter. The successful candidate will be an experienced radio reporter, who is able to tell compelling and comprehensive stories through sound. We seek a team-player who is excited about the changing media environment, and dedicated to the grounding principles of journalism. Aspen Public Radio serves an active and engaged community in the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the host of Aspen Public Radio’s Morning Edition.
    • Prepare and deliver local newscasts
    • Gather weather, ski, and river reports
    • Provide continuity throughout the program
    • Provide a broadcast, web and social media presence during breaking news and live NPR coverage
  • Serve as a news producer, working closely with the News Director news team to deliver high-quality local news programming
  • Identify and cultivate diverse sources that lead toward fair, thorough, and comprehensive coverage of the Roaring Fork Valley
  • Develops story ideas and carries out research and reporting on pertinent local issues
  • Conducts two-ways, writes spots, voicers, and feature length news reports to be placed within morning news and local magazines
  • Creates digital media story content for aspenpublicradio.org
  • Assist in the production of Aspen Public Radio’s line up of long-form local public affairs programming
  • Prepare and post social media messages for Aspen Public Radio’s facebook, instagram and twitter feeds
  • Record and produce files for automated breaks and promos
  • Participate in on-air fundraising
  • Attend and participate in station events
  • Serve as Aspen Public Radio’s representative at events, meetings, and other functions

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of professional live broadcast experience — preferably in public media
  • Ability to work on deadline without sacrificing consistency or accuracy
  • Engaging and conversational on-air presentation skills
  • A strong commitment to public radio news values and ethics and values
  • Excellent oral and written, and editing skills
  • Ability to use broadcast and production technology, proficiency with audio editing
  • Ability to gather audio in the field using proper microphone technique to gather interviews and ambient sound  
  • Familiar with using and engaging on social media, proficiency with a personal computer and smartphone
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Professional conduct during internal and external work appearances
