Lasers Help Scientists Get a Detailed Picture of the West's Snowpack

Scientists in Colorado are working to improve runoff forecasting in the West so water managers can meet growing needs in the future. A growing population coupled with climate change means every drop will count. Scientists are mapping terrain and snow with lasers to provide a more accurate picture of the snowpack. It's called the NASA JPL Airborne Snow Observatory. Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen spoke with Jeff Deems, a research scientist with the University of Colorado, Boulder. He’s involved with the project.

Snowy Forecast Brings Smiles, Plans, Worries

Aspen Skiing Company says its four mountains have gotten fifteen feet of snow this winter, only halfway through the ski and snowboard season. A big contributor was a storm that dumped a historic amount of white gold in Aspen last week. Now, more winter weather is in the works, with two feet in the forecast for the next several days. There are mixed reactions from locals and tourists.

Faster Security Checks

Next week, Aspen’s airport will become one of about one hundred in the country to allow expedited passenger security screening.  The Transportation Security Administration, TSA, will accept Aspen travelers into what’s called a pre check program meaning they can go through security check lines much faster.  APR's Roger Adams reports.
