Safety Efforts Ramp Up At Ski Area Terrain Parks

After seeing the tricks, flips and crashes at last week’s Winter X Games, it’s hard to understand why someone would take such risks. And yet, terrain parks with similar, but smaller features are ubiquitous at ski areas around the country. Education around how to be safe in these parks is growing. And, as Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen reports, the efforts are also meant to draw more people to snowboarding, which has seen a drop in popularity on the slopes.

Avalanche Forecaster: Making Good Choices… Or Getting Lucky?

The Aspen area has a high rate of avalanche accidents. And this winter there’s a new avalanche forecaster to help bring those down. Blase Reardon is with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, and gave a talk last night. That was at the Limelight Hotel, and coordinated by the group Powder for the People.

City Council Creates New Commission On Keeping Young Residents

Aspen City Council often hears from local groups on issues about zoning or preservation. Now, leaders will also focus on the concerns of a specific age group: Aspenites under forty. Councilors approved the Next Generation Commission at a meeting on Monday, January 27th. The main idea is to figure out what issues are most important to residents between eighteen and forty… and how to best tackle them.
