Road to Sochi: Freeskier Alex Ferreira Hopes to Make Team USA

Nineteen year old Alex Ferreira is a freeskier from Aspen. He's hoping to compete in the Ski Halfpipe discipline in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Aspen native Alex Ferreira was asked to be on the U.S. Ski Team before he graduated high school. The 19-year-old freeskier competes in the halfpipe and the 2014 Olympics would be his first. Right now, he’s splitting his time between training, competing and studying. He’s enrolled in college in Utah, and he says it keeps his life balanced. Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen reports.

James Salter grew up in New York City and was a career officer and Air Force pilot until his mid-thirties, when the success of his first novel, The Hunters (1957), led to a fulltime writing career. Salter’s potent, lyrical prose has earned him acclaim from critics, readers, and fellow novelists. His novel, A Sport and a Pastime (1967), was hailed by the New York Times as “nearly perfect as any American fiction.” His latest book, All That Is, was published to critical acclaim in 2013. He lives in New York and Aspen.

Non-Profit in the Spotlight: Mountain Valley Developmental Services, Part 4

Mountain Valley Developmental Services sets itself apart from similar organizations with their two major projects: Art on 8th and their greenhouse. Art on 8th is a gallery on 8th street in Glenwood Springs that sells woven goods made by weavers with developmental disabilities (who also receive services from Mountain Valley) and proceeds go back into Mountain Valley programs. The greenhouse project is a collaborative effort with neighboring Sopris Elementary School, where students and adults with developmental disabilities work together in the greenhouse; growing fresh food and learning sustainable horticultural techniques. Bruce Christensen, Executive Director, and Dana Peterson, Director of Human Resources, of Mountain Valley, discuss these two projects.

More Native Youth Have PTSD Than Recent Combat Vets

But another group of people in the US with an even higher rate of PTSD… and they have never been to a foreign war zone. That’s according to out November 2013 by a presidential commission.
