Non-Profit in the Spotlight: Mountain Valley Developmental Services, Part 4

Mountain Valley Developmental Services sets itself apart from similar organizations with their two major projects: Art on 8th and their greenhouse. Art on 8th is a gallery on 8th street in Glenwood Springs that sells woven goods made by weavers with developmental disabilities (who also receive services from Mountain Valley) and proceeds go back into Mountain Valley programs. The greenhouse project is a collaborative effort with neighboring Sopris Elementary School, where students and adults with developmental disabilities work together in the greenhouse; growing fresh food and learning sustainable horticultural techniques. Bruce Christensen, Executive Director, and Dana Peterson, Director of Human Resources, of Mountain Valley, discuss these two projects.

More Native Youth Have PTSD Than Recent Combat Vets

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is often associated with veterans, and hundreds of thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan combat vets have been diagnosed. But another group of people in the US with an even higher rate of PTSD… and they have never been to a foreign war zone. That’s according to out November 2013 by a presidential commission.

Details Emerge in Mining Accident

The recent mining accident near Ouray was one of the worst in recent Colorado history. Two miners died and nearly two dozen were injured at the Revenue-Virginius mine, of Star Mine Operations.  More details about what happened are starting to come out. Aspen Public Radio’s Elise Thatcher talks with reporter Samantha Wright, who’s covering the accident for the Telluride Watch newspapers.
