Appropriate then, that we should feature Vincenzo Bellini's story of love and politics in Oliver Cromwell's England: I Puritani, or The Puritans. I Puritani was Bellini's last opera, and he actually composed two versions. The original was premiered in Paris in 1835; the second he wrote for the famous Maria Malibran, with much of Elvira's soprano music taken down to mezzo-soprano range. But this revised version didn't make it to Naples in time for performance, and wasn't heard live until a concert performance 150 years later in 1985. On this recording: Maria Callas (Elvira), Giuseppe Di Stefano (Lord Arturo Talbo), Nicola Rossi-Lemeni (Sir Giorgio), Rolando Panerai (Sir Riccardo Forth), Angelo Mercuriali (Sir Bruno Robertson), Carlo Forti (Lord Gualtiero Walton), Aurora Cattelani (Enrichetta di Francia) Teatro alla Scala Orchestra Tullio Serafin, conductorhttp://www.aspenpublicradio.com/podcasts/oita/oita_Puritani.mp3Wed, 25 Nov 2009 00:00:00 -050003:00:00aspen public radio, kajx, nikki boxer, classical music, opera, maria callas, puritani, bellini, thanksgiving, di stefanoVerdi's I due FoscariNikki BoxerOpera in the Afternoon on Aspen Public RadioGiuseppe Verdi I due Foscari Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave Katia Ricciarelli..........Lucrezia Jose Carreras............Jacopo Foscari Piero Cappuccilli........Francesco Foscari Samuel Ramey...........Jacopo Loredano Vincenzo Bello...........Barbarigo Elizabeth Connell.......Pisana Franz Handlos...........Servant Mieczyslaw Antoniak....Officer Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra Austrian Radio Chorus Lamberto Gardelli, conductorhttp://www.aspenpublicradio.com/podcasts/oita/oita-oct09_foscari.mp3Wed, 28 Oct 2009 00:00:00 -040002:00:00aspen public radio, npr, kajx, nikki boxer, opera, classical music, verdi, foscari, lord byron, jose carrerasUmberto Giordano's Andrea ChenierNikki BoxerOpera in the Afternoon on Aspen Public RadioCo-host Jonathan Boxer joins Nikki Boxer for Umberto Giordano's story of life, love and death during the French Revolution, Andrea Chenier.
