On Friday, Basalt Police arrested the man they suspect is responsible for dumping mysterious bottles in the Roaring Fork River. They initially reported his name to be Carlos Parras-Membreno. According to Basalt Police Chief Greg Knott, the correct name is Ricardo Membreno.
The correct age was originally reported: 43 years old. It’s unclear what’s inside the bottles, but authorities say it’s corrosive and flammable.
One theory is it’s the waste product from cooking methamphetamine. When police searched the house where Membreno was living, no methamphetamine was found.
Knott told Aspen Public Radio that four other men live with Membreno; none are in custody.
