Basalt resident takes election concerns to Colorado Municipal League, DA’s office

Elise Thatcher

A Basalt resident is asking the Colorado Municipal League and a District Attorney to take a close look at the spring election in Basalt. That’s as preparations continue to swear in new town council members and mayor Jacque Whitsitt on Tuesday night.

Mary Kenyon is worried that the municipal election wasn’t carried out properly. She was a supporter of mayoral hopeful Rick Stevens, who lost to incumbent Jacque Whitsitt by about 27 votes.

Kenyon says her concerns don’t come from having her candidate lose. “Initially I had that thought,” she said Monday afternoon. “But I think once I started looking into the election practices, it became abundantly clear that the weight was favoring someone who knew the system.”

Kenyon is referring to Basalt Mayor Jacque Whitsitt. Kenyon’s list of concerns allege that the Town Clerk allowed a candidate to deliver other people’s ballots. didn’t do enough to make sure voters live in Basalt, and other red flags.

The Colorado Municipal League and District Attorney Bruce Brown are reviewing the matter next. The Colorado Secretary of State’s office declined to take a look. That agency doesn’t oversee municipal elections.

Whitsitt will be sworn in Tuesday night for her second term as mayor, along with three new Town Council members.
