Post Independent

Law enforcement has released the name of a woman who died in Carbondale earlier this week. Authorities say Maria Carminda Portillo-Amaya died on Monday. She was thirty years old, and the victim of a homicide. Portillo-Amaya’s name was released after her family worked with the Garfield County Coroner. There was also forensic testing for fingerprints, carried out by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Department of Homeland Security. The man suspected of killing the victim is still in a hospital in Grand Junction, receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a truck accident in Carbondale.

The suspect’s name has not yet been released, and the CBI says there has been no formal action in the investigation so far, though he is the only suspect. It’s believed the homicide took place at an apartment in Carbondale. The crime scene has been processed, and residents have been able to return to their home.

CBI agents, the Carbondale Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations continue to look into the case. They’re also working with the 9th Judicial District Attorney’s Office,  to figure out what led to Portillo-Amaya’s death.  She and the suspect knew each other, but it’s not clear what their relationship was. The investigation remains ongoing. Today's press release from the CBI can be read here.
