A steering committee is in the works for the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District. Its board of directors is hoping to appoint as many as seven people to the new committee. Members will review a new effort to keep the district from running out of money. It covers more than 300 square miles, including a busy stretch of Highway 82. The district lost more than half of its budget when mill levy funding ended a few years ago, and it's expected to go through its reserves in two years.
