Carbondale puzzles over childcare

A group of mothers, childcare providers, and representatives from local nonprofits met with Carbondale’s Board of Trustees Tuesday night. The group wants the town to make it easier to create daycare facilities.

Childcare in the Roaring Fork Valley is severely lacking. One third of Carbondale is younger than 12. At the The Blue Lake Preschool, which has facilities in El Jebel and Carbondale, 75 people are on the waiting list for infant care.

The group suggested Carbondale create zone districts that allow for child and daycare. They also are hoping to get the Trustees to allow the Little Blue Lake Preschool in Carbondale to double its size.

The trustees plan to send the issue to the town’s Planning and Zoning commission.
