Carbondale residents meeting to address homeless needs

Elise Thatcher

Carbondale residents are meeting Wednesday about how to beef up homeless services. Real estate agent Lynn Kirchner is leading the effort.

Kirchner says she’s seen a greater number of people struggling with housing, as well as signs that more people are homeless. A couple of incidents sparked her concern, including when Kirchner ran into a woman who used to be a rancher in the Roaring Fork Valley.  “She was out with her dog on her bicycle,” said Kirchner in Tuesday, “and seeking shelter in the laundromat the night before Thanksgiving. The laundromat was closing...and it was 6 degrees out.”

Kirchner and others are gathering Wednesday evening at the Third Street Center to see about coordinating with existing services, like the Aspen Homeless Shelter and the overnight shelter in Glenwood Springs. A representative of the Carbondale Police Department estimates officers see about four homeless people on average in town.
