Carbondale students rally for school safety

Students in Carbondale are rallying for school safety from 9:30 until 10 a.m. on Friday. The event was originally planned for last week, when students protested nationwide, but was rescheduled because of weather.

Students from the elementary, middle and high schools, as well as from Carbondale Community School, will gather on the middle school football field. A handful will speak, and the crowd will observe 17 seconds of silence for those killed in the recent Parkland, Fla. shooting.

Solana Teitler, a junior at Roaring Fork High School, is one of the organizers. She said the event is meant to give all students, from kindergarten to high school seniors, a sense of community. Thus, community members are also invited, as well as the police and fire departments, who, the organizers say, the community owes its safety to.

Teitler and her fellow organizers also have plans to hand out information on mental health services available to students.
