The Colorado Department of Transportation says the majority of the public comments about replacing the Grand Avenue Bridge in Glenwood Springs have been positive. A representative of the agency presented that and other details to Garfield County Commissioners Tuesday morning. The Colorado Department of Transportation is putting together the final environmental assessment for the new bridge. That includes getting public comments.
The proposal has been controversial, especially among Glenwood Springs residents who are worried about too much traffic through the center of town. CDOT’s Joe Elsen is overseeing the project.
“About two thirds of the comments we have received have been supportive of the project. So that was really great to see.”
CDOT hopes to have a final decision in May about how the project could impact the environment. Then the agency will know whether to move forward with putting in a new bridge. Construction would begin late next fall, and take about two years. CDOT is planning a communications effort to help locals and visitors navigate construction.
