CMC may offer education doctorate, but via school known for debt

Nova Southeastern University

Colorado Mountain College is looking at offering a new graduate program. But it would be through a school known for student loan debt.

Florida-based Nova Southeastern University wants to offer a Doctorate in Education at CMC. The degree is for students pursuing administration, teaching, and other education jobs. It would be mostly online but with some sessions in person. “Rural America in general has a shortage of professional educators, both teachers and administrators,” says Randy Smith. He’s with the Rural Community College Alliance, and hoping to coordinate the possible collaboration. “So one of the things that we want to do is provide more opportunities for folks who currently live in the area, to have access to quality graduate education.”

Nova Southeastern University and other private institutions were highlighted in a report this summer by the left-leaning Center for American Progress. The school ranked second in the nation for graduate student loan debt, tallying up more than a half a billion dollars for the recent 2013 - 2014 academic year.

On Monday afternoon, a Nova Southeastern University spokesman says the report was misleading. CMC officials were not aware of the analysis. But after reviewing national data, they believe the Florida school is, quote, “in good standing with national financial aid performance standards.”
