Colorado River in Glenwood Springs: Just about 'pier-less'

Grand Avenue Bridge Project

The old Grand Avenue Bridge has a concrete pier sitting in the middle of the Colorado River.

Crews removed most of it on Friday. This week, excavators will go underwater to dig up the concrete footer the pier is built on.

A spokesperson for the bridge project said no additional netting will be used in the river to catch debris, but inspectors are planning to watch the process closely.

Meanwhile, crews are mixing the concrete to lay the footers and piers for the new Grand Avenue Bridge, none of which will be in the river.
