Comments so far lean towards amenities for Basalt whitewater park

Comments about a Basalt whitewater park point to support for some amenities to be included.

The Healthy Rivers Citizen Advisory Board is proposing a whitewater park in Basalt, as a way to provide recreation and maintain a certain amount of water in the Roaring Fork River.

Pitkin County is holding two rounds of public comment to find out what users and neighbors want in a park. The first round showed support for including seating or other places along the river where family or friends could relax. Now the County needs to know just how many amenities to include, like how much parking to have.

“It would be very expensive to move Two Rivers Road enough to create parking right there,” says consultant Matt Annabel. He’s founder and director at Carbondale-based ACRE Narrative Design. “But, that said, it could be possible if the public basically demands it and the design gets pushed in that direction.” Parking now is down Two Rivers Road towards Highway 82, at Fisherman’s Park.
