Developer says Carbondale senior housing proposal hangs on road improvements

Elise Thatcher

A developer has asked Carbondale officials to consider a key issue for a senior housing development. The proposed Sopris Lodge would be located near the Rio Grande Trail and Main Street. There isn’t a formal application just yet, but the developer has asked the town of Carbondale to improve the quiet residential road closest to the property.

Tuesday night, officials asked town staff to find out how much that could cost, and check on another issue. “Any level of improvement to 2nd Street is going to dramatically impact the current residents and property owners along 2nd Street,” says Town Manager Jay Harrington. “And there needs to be a discussion with them as part of this process too.”

A rough description of the project includes seventy units, ranging from studios to two bedroom suites. A Basalt senior housing proposal was recently confirmed as officially not happening.
