This is the first contested race for the board of directors at the hospital in six years. Aspen Valley Hospital (AVH) canceled two previous ones because no one applied, except the incumbents. For this election, there are seven candidates running for two open seats. The candidates all answered a series of questions posed by Aspen Public Radio. Here are their responses.Ballots must be returned to AVH's administration office by 7 p.m. on May 3. They can be mailed or dropped off in person.

Doctors Nagle, Balko, take AVH leadership

Dr. Mindy Nagle and ER physician Greg Balko won seats on the Aspen Valley Hospital Board of Directors yesterday.

A total of 2109 people cast their ballots in the first contested AVH election since 2010.

In an unstable leadership environment — the board is looking for a new CEO — the public put its weight behind established medical professionals.

Mindy Nagle won reelection with the majority of the votes — just over one thousand two hundred ballots cast in her favor. Nagle says she is looking to the future, including partnerships with the University of Colorado’s medical branch,

“It’s been the goal, it’s been the plan. It’s nice to see it come to fruition,” said Nagle. “I mean our plan for the electronic portion of it spans the next 10-12 months and that coincides with some of the specialty clinics up from CU which is super exciting.”

Joining Nagle on the board is Dr. Greg Balko with eleven hundred and ninety eight votes. Balko addressed the health care platform that the Roaring Fork Valley has to deal with — including competition with other local providers.

“I certainly have a concern about growing our scope of services and the specialties represented here,” said Balko.

Aspen Public Radio previously reported that the voter turnout in 2010 was near 4,000 ballots according to  Amy Trubiroha Wells, who is administering this year’s election. Trubiroha-Wells has since corrected that number to 2,133.Trubiroha Wells didn’t explain the discrepancy in the numbers.

From the get-go, the new new board will have to concentrate on the CEO hiring process, which is only now in it’s preliminary stages.
