Eagle County Commissioners to consider The Fields development next week

Eagle County

Next Tuesday, Eagle County Commissioners will consider a proposal to build approximately a hundred homes near El Jebel. But the development, called The Fields, now has two recommendations against it.

The project comes as local governments are searching for ways to build more affordable housing. If approved, the project would have about 25 deed restricted homes, with the rest priced around a half a million dollars.

But changes to the application have raised questions with the County. “At this point staff has changed from recommending approval to recommending denial,” said Eagle County Planner Sean Hanagan on Thursday.

Hanagan says that’s because the proposal now would only pay for part of redoing a busy Highway 82 intersection nearby. The County is requiring the developer to cover all of the fix or wrangle local stakeholders to pitch in together. The rebuild is estimated to cost more than $3 million. The developer has said it’s not possible to pay for all of that without pricing out locals for the free market units.

Eagle County Commissioners will consider the proposal next Tues., April 12. A site visit begins at 4 p.m. at 554 Valley Road in El Jebel, followed by a  public hearing at 4:45 p.m. at the El Jebel Community Center at 0020 Eagle County Dr.
