Festival Notes - August 20, 2015

  Today is Thursday, August 20th.
Today at 10 in Harris Concert Hall, Yoheved (VAY-duh) Kaplinsky gives a piano master class.

A free Spotlight Recital takes place today at noon at the Aspen Community Church.
The final Chapel Chamber Music recital of the season will be performed today at 4:15 in the Aspen Chapel.
At 5 today in Harris Concert Hall, it’s a free family concert for all ages. Introduce your children to the delights of classical music with this lively short concert featuring Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. Come at 4 for free, kid-friendly refreshments and activities in the Hospitality Tent.
The Basalt Regional Library is the site of a free recital at 5:15 today.
Beethoven thought the libretto immoral and Wagner hated the music. Everyone else loves it. At 7 in the Wheeler Opera House, the Aspen Opera Theater Center presents Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte in a production by James Robinson, conducted by Jane Glover.
Pianist Conrad Tao will be joined by clarinetist Bil Jackson, violinist Stefan Jackiw (steffin JA-keef), and talented students for the Poulenc Sextet. As one critic quipped, “In Poulenc there is something of the monk and something of the rascal." Rounding out the program are the Mozart Clarinet Quintet, and the Brahms 1st String Sextet.

Classical music reporter Chris Mohr has loved classical music since he was twelve. “And I owe it all to radio,” Chris explains. “I grew up in a farm town east of Cleveland. One day I turned on the local classical radio station. They were playing Vivaldi, and it was like the gates of heaven opened up to me!" Chris is also a composer, and is working on a 53-note-to-the-octave oratorio, "Melodies of the Shoreless Sea." This is his ninth summer working for Aspen Public Radio.
