Festival Notes - August 6, 2015

  Today is Thursday, August 6th.
At 10:30 this morning at the Pitkin County Library, it’s Tunes and Tales, a free program for ages 4-9 with an adult. Listen to enchanting stories along with classical favorites performed by AMFS students.

Lots of other free events today: at noon, it’s a Spotlight Recital at the Aspen Community Church, with a diverse program featuring top student talent. Chapel Chamber Music takes place at 4:15 in the Aspen Chapel, and at 5:15 the Basalt Regional Library offers a student recital. A String Showcase at 8:30 tonight in Edlis Neeson Hall on the Bucksbaum Campus showcases some of the summer’s most exciting string players.
At 3:30 today, The Little Nell provides a luxurious setting for a Hotel Music recital.
The Science of Music series continues today at 6 at the Chabad Jewish Community Center. Today’s topic, The Neuroscience of Music, will be presented by Dr. Robert Zatorre.
Three-time Grammy-Award-winning classical guitarist Sharon Isbin celebrates her 25th Aspen summer this year, and she’s marking it in style with Guitar Passions, an electrifying concert tonight at 8 in Harris Concert Hall.  The program will include elements of classical, Latin, Brazilian, and jazz as Ms. Isbin teams up with iconic jazz star Stanley Jordan, and Brazil's leading guitarist Romero Lubambo.

Classical music reporter Chris Mohr has loved classical music since he was twelve. “And I owe it all to radio,” Chris explains. “I grew up in a farm town east of Cleveland. One day I turned on the local classical radio station. They were playing Vivaldi, and it was like the gates of heaven opened up to me!" Chris is also a composer, and is working on a 53-note-to-the-octave oratorio, "Melodies of the Shoreless Sea." This is his ninth summer working for Aspen Public Radio.
