Gardner, Tipton discuss Anvil Points in Grand Junction

Sen. Cory Gardner

On Friday, Rep. Scott Tipton and Sen. Cory Gardner held a press conference in Grand Junction with David Bernhardt, the Deputy Secretary of the Interior.

In the press conference, Gardner and Tipton answered questions about the federal government returning $18 million to Garfield, Rio Blanco, Moffat and Mesa Counties. It’s money that wasn’t used in cleaning up an area west of Rifle, called Anvil Points.

The U.S. Navy used the area for oil shale research. When the operation was discontinued, a cleanup was paid for with oil and gas royalties.

Garfield County will get nearly $7 million of the $18 million. According to County Commissioner John Martin, it’ll go into a reserve fund.
