Gathering in Glenwood Springs to tackle concerns about homelessness

Elise Thatcher

There’s a community meeting in Glenwood Springs tonight about what some say is a growing homeless problem. This summer, Glenwood saw more transient visitors than usual, coming to town for panhandling, hot meals, and other activities normally associated with homelessness.

Monday’s discussion is being organized by City Council member Kathryn Trauger, who says the goal is to get leaders from around town on the same page. “And to begin a dialogue to identify if we really do have a problem, [or] if it’s perception.” she continued during an interview on Friday. “Also to begin to identify aspects of the problem that we actually have some control over.”

Those in attendance include directors of social service groups, the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association, the police department, and others. The public meeting is being from 6 - 8pm at the Glenwood Springs Community Center. Business representatives and residents in the downtown area have said a rise in panhandling and other transient activity is scaring away tourists and generally making people uncomfortable.
