Glenwood Canyon has been partially reopened after being shut down a week ago due to multiple rockslides. Carolyn Sackariason has the details.
The Colorado Department of Transportation opened one lane at 6 o’clock last night and will keep it open until 9 a.m. today. For the next several days, the canyon will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. so crews can continue removing loose rock, repairing the road and installing fencing to stabilize the rockwall.
The canyon will be open to traffic from 4 p.m. until 9 a.m. each day until further notice. A pilot car is leading westbound and eastbound traffic separately through a six-mile stretch of the treacherous roadway. The rest of the canyon is one-lane in each direction so crews and emergency personnel can continue their work.
On Sunday, crews brought down more large boulders, including ones that were between 2 and 5 tons. CDOT closed the canyon last Monday night after two rockslides occurred, making it the longest the canyon has been closed in at least 20 years.
