Hickenlooper Claims Victory, SD 5 Race Still Undecided

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper is declaring victory. He spoke to the media and supporters at the capitol this morning.

Votes have been tallied in 54 of Colorado’s 64 counties and the gubernatorial results are close with Hickenlooper leading by just one percentage point. His challenger congressman Bob Beauprez is refusing to concede. His campaign told the Denver Post about 120,000 votes still need to be counted.

Still, Hickenlooper said this morning he’s the victor.

"The voters of Colorado have spoken and what I want to express first and foremost is gratitude. We are incredibly grateful that we have earned a second term as Colorado’s governor."

He says he’s looking forward to working with returning and new state lawmakers and partnering with republicans, like newly elected U.S. Senator Cory Gardner.

"I got a call this morning from Cory Gardner and his first words were ‘We’re going to be able to work together very, very well.'"

He also emphasized working on creating a healthier Colorado in second term, improving the state’s economy and focusing on education issues.

Another race that has impacts in our region is the State Senate District Five race, which is still undecided. Democrat Kerry Donovan leads her challenger republican Don Suppes by one percentage point. In House District 61, the Denver Post is calling it for democrat Millie Hamner who leads republican Debra Irvine by eight percentage points.
