Homestretch for petitioners against Base 2 lodge

Petitioners are getting signatures in an attempt to stop a hotel from being built in Aspen. As of last week, organizers have beyond the 680 signatures needed to get on the ballot for a public vote later this year. The question would be whether a hotel, called Base 2, should move forward.

“We’ve had people that come up to me and others saying that they don’t necessarily want their name on it because they have a renovation on a bathroom or something that they want to put through,” says Marcia Goshorn. She’s one of the leaders of the petition drive. “It makes them very nervous because they have to go before the planning office to do that.”

The project in question is by downtown landlord Mark Hunt. It’s already been approved by Aspen City Council, but Goshorn and others say it’s a bad fit for the community. Petitioners will be gathering signatures through Wednesday July 8th.
