July 4th brings travelers to the Valley, hotels near full

In addition to the farmer’s market being held today in Aspen, the fourth of July weekend brings days worth of activities to town, which is now officially in high-summer season.

Bill Tomcich, president of the resorts' central reservation agency, says although most of Aspen’s lodging will be fully occupied through Saturday, occupancy will drop to around eighty percent by early next week.

“It’s actually a bit of trough in our bookings next week, particularly Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and especially pronounced in Aspen,” Tomcich says.

Down the road in Snowmass, the Wanderlust festival will join in on the weekend’s festivities.

Rose Abello, the director of Snowmass tourism, says the festival brings in about ten thousand people to the area, and last year’s event put Snowmass hotels at their highest occupancy levels of the summer.

“We’re hopeful that these people come here and see what we have to offer, and they come back next summer for Wanderlust or they come back in the winter to ski or they come back next summer for a destination vacation," says Abello. "That would be fantastic."

Abello says that this weekend should come close to last year’s occupancy numbers.

Most flights in and out of the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport are sold out as well.
