Man found dead on Sopris identified

The man found unconscious by a hiker near the top of Mt. Sopris has been identified as 73-year-old Robert Baumgartner of Boulder. He died on Thursday from coronary artery disease, according to the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.

A hiker discovered Baumgartner on the ground near the false summit. He was unresponsive, and had no pulse. The woman and her companion performed CPR but to no avail.

The call came into the Pitkin County dispatch center about 1 pm. The woman told authorities she had seen the man alive a half hour before.

Flight for Life in air and a National Guard helicopter were brought into the field, and retrieved the body.  

Mount Sopris is a popular hiking route. The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce describes the 13-mile route as “tough as any 14-er” with lakes, rock fields and false summits.

Earlier: Thursday, September 24th, 2015 - An unidentified man was found dead near the top of Mt. Sopris Thursday. A woman discovered the man, believed to be his late 60s, on the ground near the false summit. He was unresponsive, unconscious and had no pulse.

The call came into the Pitkin County dispatch center about 1 pm. The woman told authorities she had seen the man alive a half hour before.

Sheriff deputy Alex Burchetta says there were no apparent injuries on the deceased’s body. Flight for Life in air and a National Guard helicopter were brought into the field, and retrieved the body.
