Man, truck hit by Amtrak train

Elise Thatcher

An unusual situation played out on the train tracks west of Glenwood on Tuesday, when a man in a truck was struck by an Amtrak train.

A spokesman for the Glenwood Springs Fire Department said afterwards that the driver was leaving South Canyon at the time of the accident and towing a trailer.

A westbound Amtrak passenger train collided with the pickup truck and trailer at the precise moment when the vehicles crossed the tracks. The train was going about 40 miles an hour.

The man was walking and talking after the collision but still taken to a nearby hospital. None of the nearly 200 passengers were hurt.

The train’s engine remained entangled with the truck and leaking diesel fuel. That stopped traffic in both directions for several hours. Officials hoped to have everything cleared up Tuesday evening.
