O’Connor series shines light on judicial independence

The Aspen Institute is launching a speaker series in honor of Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

O’Connor is a lifetime trustee of the Aspen Institute. The four-year speaker series dedicated to her will focus on her passions of judicial independence and civic engagement.

Meryl Chertoff, the director of the Institutes’ Justice & Society Program, said O’Connor has worked to inform people of all ages about the American judicial system since retiring from the Supreme Court.

“She was greatly concerned about educating the public about the role of the judiciary and the importance of having fair and impartial courts,” said Chertoff.

US Supreme Court Associate Justice Elena Kagan will launch the series on July 10  in Greenwald Pavilion. The event will be moderated by Margaret Marshall, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts,
