Putting on a world-class event takes an enormous amount of work — a year out from hosting the FIS World Cup finals the Aspen Skiing Co. is preparing for events on and off the mountain.
Aspen City Council heard a presentation Tuesday regarding the many logistics that will go into hosting the high profile ski racing event.
The portion of Aspen Mountain from 1A to Ruthie's with be used for the actual event, but the SkiCo is also requesting use of Wagner Park, as well as street closures, fireworks permits and transit increases.
Even a year out from the March 2017 event, SkiCo’s John Rigney said there is a lot of work needed to pull off the world-class event.
“Producing the event is the monster,” he said.
Wagner Park would be open to the public, as well as serving as the hub for all off-hill World Cup events. Childrens activities, an “apres ski” area and big-screen movies would all be a part of the festivities.
The event is scheduled for a time of year when Aspen typically has an 80 percent occupancy rate and Aspen schools are not holding classes that week.
