The current Solid Waste Hauler Ordinance was last updated in 1991. County staff says trends in waste disposal and management have changed significantly in the decades since.
The new ordinance considers a “pay as you throw” system for both trash and recycling, as well as requirements for curbside recycling and improving enforcement. It also aims to streamline with the City of Aspen’s policies.
The county hired a consultant to work on developing the new ordinance and worked with other local governments, as well as seven of the private waste management companies that serve Pitkin County.
Commissioners will hear an update on progress at their meeting Tuesday at the Pitkin County Library.
