Police: Do not open the mysterious bottles in the Roaring Fork River

Basalt Police Department

Last week, Basalt Police found a collection of bottles in the Roaring Fork River, wrapped in duct tape, with a mysterious liquid inside. Authorities are advising the public to please not open them.

Basalt police estimate around 40 to 50 of these bottles have been found in and along the river between Basalt and Glenwood Springs since late January.

Last week, officers in Basalt found 18 more. Most have been filled with a bluish liquid and a “paper like substance,” according to a press release from Garfield County Sheriff's office.

It’s still unclear what the contents are exactly, but they’re corrosive, flammable and potentially very damaging. One theory is they are a waste product from a drug-making operation.
