Proposed improvements narrowed at Aspen Airport

The Pitkin County commissioners will decide Wednesday whether to approve an update to projects planned at the Aspen airport. A change to the runway and a new terminal are now the focus. Competition from other airports for Federal Aviation Administration dollars forced the county to shorten its list of desired projects.

"The monies we were looking for have been also demanded by other airports in the country and region, so the funding levels we thought were once there have been scaled back," says John Kinney, the airport director.

One change - a reconfigured runway - would allow new, more efficient commercial aircraft to operate here. Without that change, commercial service would be reduced. Previously, an underground parking facility and a second fixed base operator were being considered.
