Residences identify stinky situation

The Aspen Skiing Company says it’s fixed a sewer problem at its upscale condos in Aspen.

After at least five weeks of a foul smell lingering about Aspen, the Residences at The Little Nell were identified as the source of a sewage leak that was entering the city’s stormwater system.

The Residences issued a statement yesterday saying company engineers identified the exact source of the leak. Pending another round of tests, the condos will be hooked back up to the municipal system.

The culprit is called a “sewage ejector pit” – a portion of the system that, at first, didn’t seem to have any problems.

“But once we sealed it up and tested it again there was not outflow so we are confident that that is the source and these tests will confirm that,” said spokesman Jeff Hanle.

The City of Aspen engineering department will oversee the tests, ensuring that no remaining bacteria or E. coli is entering the system. The city has also required the Residences to clean the Dean Street storm lines that were contaminated.
