Restitution decided for Christine Tinner, Meleyna Kistner

Basalt resident Christine Tinner has been ordered to pay tens of thousands of dollars in restitution. She accidentally killed an Illinois woman in a crash last summer. Tinner must pay more than thirty thousand dollars to the family of Meleyna Kistner.

Kistner died after Tinner’s car crossed the centerline on Highway 133 nearly a year ago. Attorney Dan Shipp says the restitution money will reimburse family members who traveled to the Roaring Fork Valley...to take care of Kistner’s body, attend court hearings, and related expenses. But, it could take a long time to pay them back. “Christine, at this point, is very limited in the amount of money she can make,” he explained Tuesday, “because of the physical limitations with her injuries that she received in the accident. And her assets at this point are pretty well depleted.”

Tinner says she fell asleep at the wheel when the crash happened. Family of the deceased woman are considering a civil lawsuit. Tinner is serving five years probation, cannot drive for two years, and must perform hundreds of hours of community service.
