Ruggerfest celebrates 50 years with 50 teams

Patrick Fort/Aspen Public Radio News

The 50th annual Ruggerfest charges into Aspen today, bringing with it a storm of international rugby players.

What started in 1968 as a modest series of local matches has become a bucket list tournament for rugby players worldwide.

This year, there will be 42 mens and 8 womens teams competing across six divisions. Half of the tournament is select side rugby, meaning stag players will join other teams for the weekend.

Colorado teams like the Glendale Raptors and Denver Barbarians, along with the Boulder Rugby Club and the Gentlemen of Aspen are slated to compete. Steve Sherlock, founder of the original Aspen Rugby Club, is expected to attend.

There will be 99 matches played out in Rio Grande and Wagner parks starting Thursday. The tournament will run through Sunday.
