Ski Jumping and the Ship

Ruthie Brown

EDITOR’S NOTE: We are very excited to share the travels of Simi Hamilton’s family to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing dispatches from Ruthie Brown and family as they give you a first-hand, “behind-the-scenes” look at the Olympics.

We've jumped ship – moved off the cruise and upgraded to a lovely hotel in Rosa Khutor (Dang! So, disappointed to not be in the "thumpa thumpa" of the disco above our room at 3:00 am). The village is the launching place for all the skiing events so we feel like we're in the throb of the mountain sport activities and easy excess to all the mountain cluster events.

We're absorbing as much as we can. Tonight's event- Long Jump! Aspen Olympian Craig Ward would appreciate the magical experience of the Jumping and Nordic Combined venue. Athletes are ripping down the ramp at close to 70 miles an hour, launching into flight (literally), floating through the air and gracefully landing in a telemark stance.

Breathtaking to be there in person!
