Snowmass concert series ends sunny Summer season

Taj Mahal grew up listening to Thelonius Monk and Charles Mingus. After he moved to California in the ‘60s, he started playing his own version of the blues.

The blues legend will play the final free concert in Snowmass tonight. Mother Nature gave Snowmass a break this year  — nearly all of the shows were played under clear skies. In seasons’ past, Thursdays were notoriously stormy.

Rose Abello, the director of Snowmass Tourism, says the shows are able to be so successful because of community support. Average attendance for the shows hit around 2,000.

“This year we had such a wide variety of music. I think we appealed to all sorts of folks.

The concerts cost Snowmass Tourism about $300,000 dollars to produce throughout the course of the summer. Artists are curated in conjunction with Jazz Aspen Snowmass, and next year’s events are already in the early planning stages.
