Snowmobilers rescued near Goodwin-Greene Hut

Mountain Rescue Aspen

Three snowmobilers survived a night in the White River National Forest by building a snow cave.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office received word Tuesday evening that three snowmobilers were stuck. The men were able to head towards the Goodwin-Greene Hut on snowshoes. The hut is south of Aspen Mountain. Although they didn’t make it to the shelter, the three built a snow cave by using their snowshoes.

On Wednesday morning, three Mountain Rescue Aspen volunteers and a Pitkin County Sheriff’s deputy went out via snowmobile to locate the stranded tourists. They were found uninjured and in a snow cave, in the Bowman Creek drainage, and about a half mile from the Goodwin Greene Hut. Two men are from Pennsylvania and one from the Denver area. Everyone in the search party was out of the field by midday Wednesday.
