Theatre Aspen announces Hairspray as summer 2017 musical

Theatre Aspen announced Monday that the organization’s big summer production will be the Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray.

This popular, feel-good story is set in the 1960s. It tells the tale of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair, who has dreams of being a star.

The story was originally portrayed in a film in the 1980s. Later, it was turned into an award-winning musical and a book. Its popularity only grew from there. A newer rendition of the film came out in 2007. And, this December, it will be broadcast on NBC as a live musical.

Theatre Aspen executive director Paige Price said this is the biggest show yet for the nonprofit. One of the reasons she chose it was because of the NBC airing, and having a tie in with pop culture.

She strives to find shows that send a strong message to viewers.

“It has a message about inclusion and about families,” Price said. “I like when a show has something to talk about, and, especially because it is a family show, families can talk about the themes in it.”

The show premieres in Aspen on June 24.
