Time Signatures: Measures of Tomorrow's Musicians - The Aurelius Quartet

The Aurelius Quartet plays together at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. They also play at the Aspen Music Festival and School.

They are currently working on a piece composed by one of the composition students at the school. Mary Grace Johnson, Alex Krew, Daniel Moore and Nathan Lowry pluck and bow their violins, violas and cellos.

But when the group has free time, they like to relax a little bit and take a break from music. Alex Krew, the eldest member of the group, says they have one particular stress-reliever.

“Every single night we have been playing Settlers of Catan, which for people who don’t know - it’s a board game," says Krew. "We’ve been doing that every single night and staying up until 1 a.m., listening to music and playing board games.”

In addition to indoor activities, they have gone on road trips outside of Aspen.

Daniel Moore says the quartet has taken advantage of the outdoors.

“...like a stone’s throw away from all these great things like the Bells and Independence Pass," says Moore. "We drove out to the Black Canyon out by Montrose. It was only two and half hours and you’re at this crazy thing.”

The group could have applied to come to the music school as an ensemble, but all said that they weren’t prepared. They would have been required to have hours of music prepared for the audition. Each member then applied individually. Nathan and Daniel had attended the school previously.

They’re friends at college and friends here. All of them agree that since they have been in Aspen, they have grown closer personally and musically. They even had the opportunity to play with indie musician Kishi Bashi who came through Aspen last weekend.
