For this primary election, voters can only choose one candidate. The two with the most votes advance to the November election, according to the Home Rule Charter. Greg Poschman, Scott Writer and Hawk Greenway, all longtime valley residents, are vying for the seat. It is currently held by Michael Owsley, who has to step down because of term limits.A polling place will be set up at the Aspen Jewish Community Center for early voting from June 20 to June 27. Ballots returned in the mail should be sent eight days prior to the election deadline — 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28.

Truck turnaround proposed at base of Indy Pass

Transportation engineers are planning to significantly alter Highway 82 so that semi trucks and other over-sized vehicles cannot physically travel up Independence Pass.

Increased fines and road warnings to large truck drivers haven’t stopped them from heading over the pass. So, the latest proposal involves creating such a tight turning radius before the closure gate that over-length vehicles wouldn’t be able to go through.

Instead, they would be directed to a new truck turnaround designed for commercial drivers to negotiate a U-turn. (see map).

County commissioners are considering the idea today. It would cost county taxpayers $250,000. The Colorado Department of Transportation would contribute $200,000.
