Two Arrest Affidavits Finally Released in Pfister Case

Elise Thatcher

Judge Gail Nichols, in Aspen, has released some of the details in why law enforcement originally arrested three people this spring in the death of Aspen native Nancy Pfister. One of the three, William "Trey" Styler, confessed last month to murdering her in February. But questions continue about why Styler's wife, and a long time local, were also held for months without bail on murder charges.

An early review of the documents shows the Pitkin County Sheriff's Department believed at the time of Pfister's death it was not possible for Mr. Styler to have cleaned up the crime scene alone. Styler suffers from a debilitating case of Lou Gehrig's disease, according to the arrest affidavit for his wife, Nancy Styler.

Styler's sentencing in June, to a term of twenty years, charges were then dropped against his wife Nancy Styler and former Alpine Bank employee Kathy Carpenter. Both women were both released from jail and prosecutors have said Mrs. Styler will not face charges in the case of Pfister's death in the future. They have not made similar statements for Kathy Carpenter, and hinted they may file theft charges against Ms. Carpenter. Then, the District Attorney's Office said in recent days that prosecutors are unlikely to file theft charges.
