  Update Thursday July 30, 1:53pm

The man suspected of robbing a pot store in Aspen was arrested in Missouri after a high speed chase that involved a head on collision with a police officer’s patrol car.

Hayden May, 21 of Aspen, is also suspected of stealing a firearm on Wednesday before he fled Colorado in a black, 2007 Chevy Tahoe, believed to be stolen from his former employer.

Aspen Police were able to track May’s cell phone to alert theSt. Louis County Police Department of his whereabouts. Officers were able to locate the vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 and initiated a stop, using verbal commands ordering May to exit his vehicle. Instead, May drove away from the officer and the interstate, traveling at speeds up to 100 miles per hour, according to Aspen Police.

The Edmundson Police Department assisted in the chase as May turned off onto local roads, at one point making a U-turn. He hit a parked car, a patrol vehicle and colliding with a utility pole during the pursuit.

Officers again gave verbal commands for May to exit his vehicle and he refused. An officer used his baton to break the passenger side window and ordered May to exit the vehicle. May complied and was arrested outside the vehicle unharmed. The firearm was not recovered on scene. An Edmundson Police Officer was treated at a local hospital for a possible neck injury. The case will be presented to the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office before any possibility of May being extradited to Colorado.

The Aspen Police Department issued a felony warrant for armed robbery of a controlled substance — among other charges — after a July 28 incident at Stash Aspen, when May is alleged to have threatened employees with a hammer and stole $11,000 worth of marijuana. At the time, Aspen Police issued a statement that it did not consider May a threat to the community. May told the Stash employee that he was “desparate.”

Additional charges will be filed by the Aspen Police Department against May for aggravated theft of a motor vehicle.
