A Carbondale man confessed to killing his wife while he was being airlifted to a hospital in Grand Junction on Monday, according to law enforcement. The Carbondale Police Department issued a press release that says the man was driving a Toyota 4Runner that collided with a semi truck on Highway 133 on Monday morning. While in flight to St. Mary’s in Grand Junction, he “allegedly told the flight crew that he had killed his wife” in an apartment building in Carbondale. Police investigated and discovered a deceased woman with knife wounds.

Gene Schilling is Carbondale’s Police Chief, and provided an update late this morning.

“Right now we are still conducting interviews with witnesses. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI)  is up here currently helping us with those investigations. Once we get all of our crime scene processed and investigation’s complete, up to a point where we can today, we will be hoping to go forward with an arrest warrant for the suspect.”

Once an arrest warrant is approved, Carbondale Police can release his identity and the name of the victim. Chief Schilling says it’s possible that could happen later today, and the suspect would be the same man involved in Monday’s accident.

The CBI is the lead agency on the case, with Carbondale Police coordinating assistance from several other law enforcement offices. That includes the Grand Junction Police, the District Attorney’s Office, and other investigators. The Carbondale Police Department says the last homicide in Carbondale was April 2003.
