Valley Roundup 3-4-16

Welcome to Valley Roundup. I’m Carolyn Sackariason.

Joining me this week are Randy Essex, editor of the Glenwood Post Independent, Andy Stone, columnist for the Aspen Times and Curtis Wackerle, editor of the Aspen Daily News.

The Carbondale Town Trustees this week approved a new City Market that will be larger than the one that’s there now and will include a fuel station.

And a new citizen group has emerged that wants to make sure the Pan and Fork parcel in Basalt is developed in a responsible way.

There’s also an election in Basalt this spring in which three town trustee seats are up, as well as the mayor’s.

And there are more contested seats throughout the valley this year. One of the longest serving county commissioners in Garfield County — who’s known for being difficult — is being challenged. There are at least three people running for District Attorney, including incumbent Sherry Caloia. And in Carbondale, eight people are running for three seats and only one is an incumbent. The town is also asking voters to approve a carbon tax.

In Aspen, development at the base of Ajax’s western side is slow moving with one lodge proposal asking for tweaks while another landowner is waiting to see what happens with that before filing a land-use application for a separate hotel. At stake is whether a new lift 1A will be ready in time for the World Cup finals in 2017.

Finally, a Pitkin County got a surprise when she came home to find a $1,000 in cash left for her by an anonymous admirer.
