Will the city of Aspen's economy go uphill?

Aspen Public Radio

In an effort to create an “uphill economy” for Aspen, elected officials are bringing in outside help. Aspen Public Radio’s Carolyn Sackariason has the details.

The municipal government has already hired a consultant who is doing research on how to build a business plan around the sport and industry, That person is Bob Schultz and is working with the state office for economic development. The Carbondale-based consultant is on a $2,000 retainer to do that work and possibly draft a request for proposals, or RFP, to hire another consultant.

City council will consider next week whether to authorize that RFP. The work done by the chosen firm or individual is estimated to cost between $15,000 and $35,000. The end result will be creating what’s been dubbed the “Uphill Economy Economic Development and Recruitment Plan.”

The consultant would strategize how to position Aspen as a home for research, development and manufacturing of uphill athletic gear and associated businesses.

The goal is create a local economic engine around the growing sport.
